The first step in growing mushrooms at home is to decide which type of mushroom you want to grow. There are many different varieties to choose from, each with its own unique flavour and growing requirements. Popular options for beginners include oyster mushrooms and Lions Mane mushrooms. Once you've chosen your mushroom variety, the next step is to acquire a growing kit. Growing kits typically come with everything you need to get started, including a fully colonised substrate block that the fungi will grow on which is a mix of oak wood pellets, Soya Hull pellets and water that has been sterilised prior to being inoculated with mycelium grain spawn.

These kits make the growing process much easier for beginners, as they eliminate the need for complex sterilisation procedures. Next, you'll need to create the right growing conditions for your mushrooms. Its a myth that most mushrooms thrive in a dark environment, on the contrary, most fungi are just like humans - they require light, humidity and fresh air.

Make sure to mist your mushrooms regularly to keep the growing medium moist. As your mushrooms grow, you'll start to see small pinheads form. These will eventually develop into mature mushrooms ready for harvest. Depending on the variety you're growing, this process can take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks. Once your mushrooms are ready, simply twist them off the growing medium and enjoy! After your first harvest, if kept moist, the growing block will continue to produce a further two or sometimes even three more flushes!

In addition to providing a delicious harvest, growing mushrooms at home can also have some fantastic health benefits. Many varieties of mushrooms are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, making them a nutritious addition to your diet. Some mushrooms even have medicinal properties and have been used in traditional medicine for centuries. So, if you're looking for a new and exciting gardening project, why not try growing mushrooms at home? With the right supplies and a little bit of patience, you can enjoy a bountiful harvest of delicious, nutritious fungi right in your own kitchen. Happy growing!
